What is Greatness?
You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Mt. 20:25-28)
When we play by the world’s definition of greatness:
We want people to know our names.
We want to use our power to fulfill our desires.
We want people to serve us.
We want people to recognize our faces.
We want to be first.
We want to be the most popular person in the room.
When we go by Jesus’ definition of greatness:
We learn the names of others.
We use our power to help others.
We serve others.
We recognize our neighbor as more important than ourselves.
We genuinely want others to be first.
We are unaware of whether we’re popular or not.
