Confession: I'm Nitpicky

In a previous post, I did some thinking about the “bridge illustration” of the gospel. My intent wasn’t to be critical or “nitpicky.” However, after looking at the post, that’s exactly what it turned out to be.

Here’s a definition of nitpicky: overly critical, esp. on trivial matters; focused on only trivial aspects.

And here’s a confession: I’m nitpicky. I can remember many times in which I’ve apologized by saying, “I’m sorry if I was being too nitpicky.” Well, I was. And I am.

That’s what the Pharisees of Jesus’ day did too. Here’s what Jesus says in Matthew 23:23-24: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!”

Unfortunately, I find myself doing this very thing! I’m overly critical of trivial things and forget the weightier matters… justice, mercy, and faithfulness.

I’m thankful for the amazing grace that is in Jesus Christ. I’m thankful for being adopted into God’s family. I’m thankful that He has freed me to serve others. And I’m thankful for a God who forgives even Pharisees.
